Penshurst sits on the high ground between Hurstville and Mortdale, and its streets are some of the most established in the St George area. Federation and interwar bungalows line the leafy blocks, plenty of them double-brick or full-brick with heritage features intact.

Original vitrified clay sewer pipes still run under many of these homes, cracking and leaking as decades of ground movement work on them.

Laycock Road runs past the elevated reservoirs that have supplied this high ground since 1910, a reminder of just how long some of this suburb's underground infrastructure has been in the ground. Storage hot water units from the same era are common too, ageing quietly until the morning they simply don't heat.

There's a terrain factor too. A former creek line through McRaes Reserve now runs as underground stormwater, and the undulating ridge-and-slope ground channels runoff downhill toward it. Heavy rain finds the limits of that piped system fast.

Sitting around 56 metres up, this ridge position keeps homes well clear of coastal salt air, so fittings here aren't fighting corrosion the way a beachside suburb's would.

What they're fighting instead is age. Shale and clay in the ground here expand and contract through the year, and that slow movement is what finally cracks a pipe already decades past its prime.

Two small retail strips sit either side of the station here, each with its own run of cafes and eateries, and each running on drainage laid out decades before either strip existed as a going concern.

What a shopfront kitchen tips down the sink differs from a household's: more oil, more food scraps, more of it at once, all through the same clay lines put in for the bungalows around them.

We ask what's actually gone down the drain before we quote a strip job, because that changes the clearing method more than it would for a house round the corner. A grease-heavy blockage needs a different approach to a root-choked one, even in pipe of the same age and material.

Neither strip is large, but both send enough volume through ageing pipework to make the diagnosis worth getting right the first time, rather than clearing the surface symptom and getting called back a fortnight later.

Ridge houses and reservoir-era infrastructure aren't the same trade problem as a coastal suburb's corroded fittings, and we already know which one we're looking at before we knock.
